The Context

With the transition to remote work amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the Houzz Workplace Experience Team wanted to deepen the company’s investment in mental health to support employees and their mental health during the pandemic and beyond.

In their research, the team came across Mind Share Partners as a leader in the workplace mental health space.

“What stood out about Mind Share Partners were testimonials from the Mind Share Partners team members about why they work there and the organization’s mission… Everything seemed destigmatized and vulnerable. [The Mind Share Partners team] had different reasons for why mental health was important to them—not just fluff, but people being real with each other.

- Nicole Perez, Workplace Experience Team Lead, Houzz

The Solution

Starting in December 2020, Mind Share Partners partnered with Houzz to deliver a two-part training series for Houzz managers:

  • Mental Health at Work for People Managers: Introduction
    Launched in December 2020
A 60-minute, interactive, on-demand recorded module divided into bite-sized videos and integrated into Houzz’s learning management system that equipped managers with actionable tools for creating a safe and supportive environment for mental health. Topics included:

    • Understanding the spectrum of mental health, its signs & symptoms, and its impact in the workplace.

    • Identifying workplace situations where mental health may be playing a role, and what to do about it.

    • How to build healthy team cultures to prevent mental health distress, including how to have healthy, productive conversations about mental health with team members and colleagues.

    • Additional tips for supporting colleagues during the coronavirus pandemic.

    • Templates for creating individual action plans.

  • Mental Health at Work for People Managers: Introduction: Scenario Deep Dives
    March & May 2021
Five, live, virtual, and interactive 90-minute sessions focused on navigating deeper dive scenarios around workplace mental health. The scenarios were designed based on feedback from discovery interviews and manager input from the introductory session, including:

    • Navigating mental health and performance conversations

    • Accommodations, adaptations, and creating a sustainable work culture

    • Considerations for remote working

  • Mind Share Partners Institute
    Winter 2021
Two members of Houzz’s Workplace Experience team attended the Mind Share Partners Institute—a 4-session virtual certification program that leverages expertise from mental health, management, and legal fields to equip leaders with tools and strategies to create mentally healthy cultures—to deepen their knowledge and expertise as they continued to steer culture change around mental health at Houzz.

The Impact

After the manager training series:

  • 100% of post-survey respondents had a better understanding of what their role is (and isn’t) to support mental health at work

  • 96% had a better understanding of mental health and stigma, and how they show up at work.

  • 96% felt more comfortable talking about mental health at work.

  • 96% felt better-equipped to support a colleague with their mental health if they need support.

After the Mind Share Partners Institute, Nicole and another member of her team became certified mental health champions.

As Nicole shared:

“The biggest thing I took away from the Institute was how, in everything we do at Houzz, there’s an opportunity to discuss and destigmatize mental health—not just during Mental Health Awareness Month, but thinking about it from a leader, practice, and policy level. It has to be embedded in everything we do.”

Additionally, Nicole was equipped with an actionable, strategic plan of activities as tasked by the Institute’s capstone project where Institute participants were instructed to develop a plan for their own organizations based on the Institute learnings.

“We had so many managers tell us how much they loved the content, and the personal stories our VPs shared at the beginning of the session. I just did a focus group recently for our content [at Houzz], and I had Houzzers call out the Mind Share Partners manager training. They love how it destigmatized mental health.”

- Nicole Perez, Workplace Experience Team Lead, Houzz

“Fostering a culture of support for mental health is important to us, and Mind Share Partners has helped us to further this. Through Mind Share Partners' manager training series, we were able to give managers actionable tools to provide support to their teams. Thank you to the Mind Share Partners team for helping us with this meaningful program.”

Looking Forward

In addition to their upcoming open enrollment activities, Houzz is exploring additional training options for all Houzz employees, their People Services team, and Houzz people managers.
